Heacham
resident, Beth Winsor, began Heacham Book Group in April 2005, to
encourage a shared appreciation of contemporary literature. The Group is
now firmly established and meets on the third Tuesday of each month.
Recently, the Group became involved with an exciting new reading group
initiative, called "Village Read" which will begin in West Norfolk and
eventually be county-wide. The group is kick-starting "Village Read" by
selecting the first book – Eve Green by Susan Fletcher, a coming
of age story set in rural Wales and winner of the 2005 Whitbread First
Novel Award. It was also chosen as a Richard and Judy summer read the
same year. This will be the book for February 2007. Author Susan
Fletcher will be coming to Heacham in March to talk to readers about the
book and answer questions.
"Village Read" is a unique reading group project which enables people
who love to read and review books but are unable to attend regular
meetings to get involved from the comfort of their own homes via mobile
libraries, so even if you have difficulty getting out of the house, or
find yourself surrounded by non-readers, "Village Read" allows you to
join in.
A new book will be selected every four weeks, based on members'
suggestions, and comments may be registered via the "Village Read" forum
which may be accessed by following the links on
www.creativeartseast.co.uk.
Alternatively, you may complete a comments sheet in the mobile library
and the librarian will file it for other readers to see.
Every few months, author
events will be arranged where readers who want to get together can meet
in a local village hall to listen to a speaker and discuss their reading
over a glass of wine or a cup of tea.
